One of only a handful of commercial nuclear waste disposal sites, the Energy Solutions site is also the only commercial facility in the nation that can accept mixed radioactive and hazardous wastes. Since 1986, when it was opened by the Department of Energy for the disposal of uranium mill tailings, this facility has greatly expanded and now accepts radioactive material from most of the DOE’s major industrial sites, from commercial generators, and numerous military sites.
